Theincreasingdemandsformoreefficientandbrighterthin-filmlight-emittingdiodes(LEDs)inflat-paneldisplayandsolid-statelightingapplicationshavepromotedresearchintothree-dimensional(3D)perovskites.Thesematerialsexhibithighchargemobilitiesandlowquantumefficiencydroop,makingthempromisingcandidatesforachievingefficientLEDswithenhancedbrightness.ToimprovetheefficiencyofLEDs,itiscrucialtominimizenonradiativerecombinationwhilepromotingradiativerecombination.Variouspassivationstrategieshavebeenusedtoreducedefectdensitiesin3Dperovskitefilms,approachinglevelsclosetothoseofsinglecrystals.However,theslowradiative(bimolecular)recombinationhaslimitedthephotoluminescencequantumefficiencies(PLQEs)of3Dperovskitestolessthan80%,resultinginexternalquantumefficiencies(EQEs)ofLEDdevicesoflessthan25%.Herewepresentadual-additivecrystallizationmethodthatenablestheformationofhighlyefficient3Dperovskites,achievinganexceptionalPLQEof96%.ThisapproachpromotestheformationoftetragonalFAPbI3perovskite,knownforitshighexcitonbindingenergy,whicheffectivelyacceleratestheradiativerecombination.Asaresult,weachieveperovskiteLEDswitharecordpeakEQEof32.0%,withtheefficiencyremaininggreaterthan30.0%evenatahighcurrentdensityof100?mA?cm?2.Thesefindingsprovidevaluableinsightsforadvancingthedevelopmentofhigh-efficiencyandhigh-brightnessperovskiteLEDs.

Electrifiedsolid–liquidinterfaces(ESLIs)playakeyroleinvariouselectrochemicalprocessesrelevanttoenergy,biologyandgeochemistry.Theelectronandmasstransportattheelectrifiedinterfacesmayresultinstructuralmodificationsthatmarkedlyinfluencethereactionpathways.Forexample,electrocatalystsurfacerestructuringduringreactionscansubstantiallyaffectthecatalysismechanismsandreactionproducts.Despiteitsimportance,directprobingtheatomicdynamicsofsolid–liquidinterfacesunderelectricbiasingischallengingowingtothenatureofbeingburiedinliquidelectrolytesandthelimitedspatialresolutionofcurrenttechniquesforinsituimagingthroughliquids.Here,withourdevelopmentofadvancedpolymerelectrochemicalliquidcellsfortransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM),weareabletodirectlymonitortheatomicdynamicsofESLIsduringcopper(Cu)-catalysedCO2electroreductionreactions(CO2ERs).Ourobservationrevealsafluctuatingliquid-likeamorphousinterphase.Itundergoesreversiblecrystalline–amorphousstructuraltransformationsandflowsalongtheelectrifiedCusurface,thusmediatingthecrystallineCusurfacerestructuringandmasslossthroughtheinterphaselayer.Thecombinationofreal-timeobservationandtheoreticalcalculationsunveilsanamorphization-mediatedrestructuringmechanismresultingfromcharge-activatedsurfacereactionswiththeelectrolyte.OurresultsopenmanyopportunitiestoexploretheatomicdynamicsanditsimpactinbroadsystemsinvolvingESLIsbytakingadvantageoftheinsituimagingcapability.

Chemicalvapourdeposition(CVD)synthesisofgrapheneoncopperhasbeenbroadlyadoptedsincethefirstdemonstrationofthisprocess.However,widespreaduseofCVD-growngrapheneforbasicscienceandapplicationshasbeenhinderedbychallengeswithreproducibilityandquality.Hereweidentifytraceoxygenasakeyfactordeterminingthegrowthtrajectoryandqualityforgraphenegrownbylow-pressureCVD.Oxygen-freechemicalvapourdeposition(OF-CVD)synthesisisfastandhighlyreproducible,withkineticsthatcanbedescribedbyacompactmodel,whereasaddingtraceoxygenleadstosuppressednucleationandslower/incompletegrowth.Oxygenaffectsgraphenequalityasassessedbysurfacecontamination,emergenceoftheRamanDpeakanddecreaseinelectricalconductivity.Epitaxialgraphenegrowninoxygen-freeconditionsiscontamination-freeandshowsnodetectableDpeak.Afterdrytransferandboronnitrideencapsulation,itshowsroom-temperatureelectrical-transportbehaviourclosetothatofexfoliatedgraphene.Agraphite-gateddeviceshowswell-developedintegerandfractionalquantumHalleffects.Byhighlightingtheimportanceofeliminatingtraceoxygen,thisworkprovidesguidanceforfutureCVDsystemdesignandoperation.TheincreasedreproducibilityandqualityaffordedbyOF-CVDsynthesiswillbroadlyinfluencebasicresearchandapplicationsofgraphene.

Colloidalcrystalsexhibitinterestingpropertiesthatareinmanywaysanalogoustotheiratomiccounterparts.Theyhavethesamecrystalstructures,undergo.Hereweshowthathard-spherecolloidalcrystalsexhibitworkhardening.Moreover,despitetheirsoftness,theshearstrengthofcolloidalcrystalscanincreaseandapproachthetheoreticallimitforcrystals,avaluereachedinveryfewothermaterialssofar.Weuseconfocalmicroscopytoshowthatthestrengthofcolloidalcrystalsincreaseswithdislocationdensity,andultimatelyreachestheclassicTaylorscalingbehaviourforatomicmaterials,althoughhard-sphereinteractionslackthecomplexityofatomicinteractions.WedemonstratethatTaylorhardeningarisesthroughtheformationofdislocationjunctions.TheTaylorhardeningregime,however,isestablishedonlyafteratransientphase,anditceaseswhenthecolloidalcrystalsbecomesohardthatthestrainislocalizedwithinathinboundarylayerinwhichslipresultsfromanunconventionalmotionofdislocations.Thestrikingresemblancebetweencolloidalandatomiccrystals,despitethemanyordersofmagnitudedifferenceinparticlesizeandshearmodulus,demonstratestheuniversalityofworkhardening.
